Our first stop this morning, a sunny morning, was Meerlust. Meerlust boasts a Rubicon red, one of SA’s top wines. This tasting, unlike yesterday’s Franschoek’s vineyards, had more of a shed vibe, was more relaxed, with great wines.
From there we headed to Vergenoegd and arrived just in time to watch the Indian runner ducks rambling down to the farm Dam. Their amusing ritual starts at 9:30 as the flock of 1000 ducks are set free in the vineyards. The waddling workforce is essential to the farms pest control, consuming snails and bugs on their daily patrol. At 12:30 they waddle down to the dam. After the ducks, we went to the restaurant for a snack platter and Ga bumped into one of his old lecturers, who is working on the farm. He gave us a free wine blending and taste experience which we booked for tomorrow.
This afternoon Gray and I visited our friends, the van der Vyvers, who moved down to the wine country five years ago. It was great to catch up with them in their beautiful home on De Zalze Estate.
This evening we returned to Bramptons, where we were joined by a rowdy and fun crowd of Robs’ friends. Lots of wine, food and laughs were had by all.
