Day 90: Stellenbosch

Today was another cold, wet winters day but that didn’t put a dampener us having lots of fun.

Robs finished lectures early and we took a drive through to Franschhoek. Gareth lived on a vineyard in this beautiful town for two years. It is set amongst the centuries old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. We drove around the town and visited some of his favourite places before embarking on a day of wine tasting on some of the most beautiful farms.

Gone are the days when wine tasting took place in an old shed on the farm.  Lots of money has been thrown at beautiful wine tasting rooms with experts taking you through the wine tasting experience. Big names are behind a lot of the farms too. Richard Branson now owns Mont Rochelle, our first stop.

My favourite tasting was at Ruperts, which took place in a beautifully restored old Cape Homestead. We toured the house before the tasting. Gray opting for the reds and the rest of us doing an MCC tasting with nougat  pairing.

Ruperts is next to Bellingham Estate, where Ga used to live. We also stayed there a few times, once in the beautiful old manor house with its magnificent gardens. It brought back wonderful memories.

A very happy group returned to Stellenbosch for an early dinner at a cute bistro and ice creams from our new favourite ice cream shop.
